Festival Highlights

The LIDF 2012 programme is wide and vast, ranging from hard-hitting investigative journalism to the whimsical and experimental. Whether you enjoy intimate portraits of courageous individuals, or the tear-inducing depictions of long enduring marriages now ravaged by old age and ill-health; the quirky fun of animated shorts or the search for retribution by victims of crimes against humanity; whether you wonder why our obsession with cheap energy is costing the earth or despair at the fate of our ‘free’ media, whether your heart leaps for joy at the simple tale of a father and his son or the many other forms of love and empathy that so many of the films exhibit, we believe you will find, not one, but many films to satisfy, inspire and increase that sense of being part of an interconnected planet.

Despite the myriad blights that affect all parts of the globe each film is testimony to a will to understand, to reason, connect. The clear, sympathetic gaze, the reluctance to reach for polemic is part of the filmmakers role but also part of the viewers role. The films give us pause. What is in that pause?

We believe all the films in the festival have a story to be told and story worth viewing. They are all equal. Yet, we also know the festival programme is large and so here we will try to help you navigate its benevolent seas.

There are three exciting strands of short films UK SHORTS, INTERNATIONAL SHORTS, and INVISIBLE CITY. Many other strands and themes run through the festival, some unexpected. You can plot your own enjoyable route through the programme. but here are a few thoughts we thought might be useful.
