Borderland is a short documentary film which explores the cultural, historical and personal landscape of the inner German border 20 years after its fall. Filmmakers Cozette Carroll Russell and Julian Russell filmed along the former border collecting images and stories; creating a collage of memories from former East German citizens. In Berlin, tourists photograph themselves in front of rusting relics trying to imagine the city divided. For those who lived through it the reunification of East and West Germany proved to be more complicated than the joyous images portrayed on the TV news. What happened when socialist East Germany was enveloped by the West and what became of the 858 miles of fences, watch towers and death strips as nature began to reclaim the land?
