Part of A Conversation in Europe at LIDF with the Barbican.
Romanian dictator Nicolai Ceauescu had many enemies, but the one he feared the most was invisible and untouchable – Radio Free Europe. So paranoid was he about its potential to encourage dissent, he even went as far as trying to hire infamous assassin Carlos the Jackal to help close it down.
DJ’s, listeners, secret policemen, terrorists – all share their stories in this film about a Europe that no longer exists in which the only thing that could travel freely was a simple, subversive radio wave.
Followed by Q&A with director Alexandru Solomon and journalists from Radio Free Europe.
