Director: Stephen Hyde, 2008, USA, 11min
European Première

“Glacial ice tastes sweeter.”

Twice a week, 82-year-old Maji and her family make the eight mile trek up to the glacier near their home in the Andes to harvest the finest blocks of blue ice by hand. This they transport to the town and sell as the flavoured ice delicacy Shikashika.

A rare glimpse of life in the Andean mountains of Peru.

The Far South
Director: Frances Anderson, David Gacs, 2006, Chile/Australia, 9min
European Première

Puerto Toro, Chile; close to Antarctica. An old couple discuss their isolated existence on the world’s southernmost settlement.

A Better Life
Director: Joanne Ball, 2006, UK, 23min
UK Première

In 2004, 360,000 people left the UK to live abroad – a record number. This film is a lyrical document of the lives of seven British migrants, their reasons for leaving and their reflections on ‘home’.

Possessed
Director: Martin Hampton, 2007, UK, 21min

“Young British documentary maker Martin Hampton’s shocking depiction of lives blighted by obsessive hoarding.” Nick Holdsworth, Variety

Possessed enters the complicated worlds of four hoarders; people whose lives are dominated by their relationship to possessions. Mobile phones, books, food containers, pieces of paper – all are taking over the lives of these ‘collectors’. The film questions whether hoarding is a symptom of mental illness or a revolt against the material recklessness of consumerism. When does collecting become hoarding and why do possessions exert such an influence on our lives?

This film recently won the Silver Egg (second prize) at Emir Kusturica’s Küstendorf Film Festival in Serbia.
