Daughters of the Revolution

“In order for people to be happy, sometimes they have to take risks”

Following the revolution in Iran, women’s rights and civil liberties were progressively curtailed and compromised by the Islamic government. Unwilling to accept this disregard for human rights, lawyer, writer and activist Mehrangiz Kar became an outspoken critic of the establishment, promoting democracy and pushing for reforms despite constant interference from the government and the very obvious danger both to herself and to her daughter.

Eventually banned from all public appearances, in 2000 she was arrested for acting against the national security of the Islamic Republic.

This is the story of Kar’s crusade for human rights, personal freedom and happiness, and the consequences for her and her family of the struggle against oppression.
