In the American sci-fi movies of the 1950s, the era was one of hope, unity and discovery. A young president inspired the nation, and the scientist was king. The scientist it was whose grasp of the new, cutting-edge technology would save the world, defeat the alien monster or solve the problem of space travel. But now that we live in a super-technical age, where are we to find our own scientific inspiration?
Thirty classic sci-fi films are interwoven to tell the story of the modern scientist and their role in inspiring America, and to ask: are these classic sci-fi films about the bomb or about Freud?
“Great science fiction isn’t just about monsters and ray guns, it’s about humanity and how men react both morally and philosophically to the world in which they live.”
