Shanghai is the city that is leading China’s economic revolution. With the financial, commercial, and industrial sectors all growing at breakneck speed, it has become the richest, largest, and most populated city in the whole of China. The transformation has been spectacular. And it’s not only the big corporations that are getting rich.
Only 30 years ago, self-employment was prohibited – now, millions of former factory labourers are becoming their own bosses, adapting with excitement to the new capitalism.
Pei Yao Xu is one such former labourer with a triumphant story to tell. Now 76, she has witnessed at first hand the turbulent formation of modern China while working as a book binder for Shanghai’s largest printing factory. Now, she owns a factory of her own, with a growing workforce and strict deadlines.
Shanghai Bound looks at this unique female entrepreneur, from her socialist roots to her present day capitalist lifestyle.
