Drive-in Dreams

World Premiere
Anna Bowman | | 10 mins

Just off Abbey Road, north London there is an ugly concrete multi-storey car park – a utopian space: Originally designed a new living space that would include housing and separate cars and people, the new urban promise seemed to wither until the complex was transformed from within into music studios, upholsterers, picture framers, car repair workshops and even a roof-top flat, all co-existing with a working car park. What dreams, what experiences make people like being there? Why are they concerned about new plans to pull the place down?

Under your skin

Cristina Picchi | | 08:12 mins

Using the momentum of the upcoming Olympic games- London 2012, this immersive audio-visual experience sets out to explore carefully chosen Olympic sports from a fresh angle. Gerstein and Picchi set out to capture a first hand delicate portrait of local London based athletes, revealing a world to which fans do not normally have access to in the common television broadcasts and interviews.
Each athlete is articulated by three different complementary moments – Preparation-Subjective participation-Aftermath.
The piece weaves different sports together to complete a statement about the intimate personal/emotional/metaphysical inner world of the athletes involved. Their skills and determination is put to the ultimate test. From the teenage gymnast who already carries an injury but keeps pushing further, to the young boxer who dreams of participating in the Olympics while completing his University degree. They each bear the qualities encapsulated in the Olympic manifesto and even if some of them will never compete in the Olympics, they still bear an essential part of London’s Olympic spirit as it grooms itself towards London 2012.
National Portrait Gallery/BT Road to 2012 participation project in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London
