The guy who cajoled her into the business was legendary maverick theatre director Ken Campbell. But he was more than a mentor; he was Nina's lover too. Nina has already moved on from Ken, and is now ready to give-up ventriloquism. When Nina finds out that Ken has bequeathed her his puppets in his will, Nina attempts to come to terms with the death of Ken by taking his bereaved voiceless wards on pilgrimage to Venthaven. And, there, at a Convention for vent-acts from all over the world Nina begins to regret her decision to forsake her art-form, meeting truly innovative ventriloquists.
By bringing his vent-puppets back to life, and through the strange medium of ventriloquism, the star-crossed lovers are reunited once more.
