Deprivation in British seaside towns is on the increase. Two separate families and a single man, who turn up one morning in May at a Dorset foodbank, talk of their desperation and shame at having to use one. The seaside location provides strong images and soundscape for these people who talk openly about their struggle to keep ‘their heads above water’.

Ase lives in Diyarbakır, since her village was destroyed by the Turkish government. She is 83 years old. She goes to her village in spring time and stays there until the end of autumn,alone with her memories.  Her son was a PKK guerrilla and was killed many years ago. His grave is in the village of Nusaybin. Ase visits his grave.

It looks like a dream, filled with the whispers thoughts and the lives of those who work here, as well as those who are just passing through. It is also a very concrete place, a perfect spot to observe today’s Europe, the violence carried by the free competition of a single market, the nostalgia carried by uprooted lives, and all the solitude engendered by our modern world.

“Who’s Afraid of Julia Kristeva?” + Q&A
Iskra Angelova | 2017 | Bulgaria | 83

1966. Bulgaria is still behind the Iron Curtain. Julia Kristeva – a young and smart student – goes to Paris on a scholarship from the French government. There she finds herself among the cream of the French intelligentsia, where she meets the leader of the movement Tel Quel – Philippe Sollers. The two instantly fall in love and marry. She begins to work with Claude Lévi-Strauss, Jacques Derrida, Lucien Goldmann, Roland Barthes and Jacques Lacan. Iskra Angelova’s film tells the story of a successful and controversial figure – psychoanalyst, linguist, semiotician, philosopher and feminist.
