The Invisible City is an all-day audio, visual and filmic exploration of Hackney, the Lea Valley, Kings Cross and rest of North and East London. The diverse range of work on show shares a common concern for the urban environment, its changing built and natural landscapes and the way it affects those who live and work within it.

The all-inclusive ticket will allow visitors to pick and choose between film and photographic documentaries screened in the cinema room, audio documentaries playing in a blacked-out listening room, and a rolling programme of talks and workshops throughout the day.

Talks
Many of the artists and producers who’s work is on show will be contributing to the programme of talks and in-depth discussions. Highlights include Mike Seabourne, Senior Curator of Photography at The Museum of London in discussion with radio journalist Alan Dien, of The Kings Cross Voices archive, and artist Simon Pope will be talking about his own experience as artist-chronicler of London. Other documentary makers contributing to the day are offering talks and discussions on topics ranging from their own experiences of documenting the city to developments in the Lea Valley.

A concluding panel discussion will bring the artists, producers, speakers and audience together to tackle some the most pressing questions raised during the day, including  how the practice of making documentaries captures and affects the profoundly imaginative and emotional relationships we have with the places we live in.

Film
Documentaries include John Roger’s London Perambulator (2009), in which Iain Sinclair and Will Self explore East London’s liminal spaces, films from the London Refugee Stories Project, highlights from Cambridge Super8 Film Festival and Edgelands, a eulogy to the parts of Hackney Wick being absorbed by the Olympics.

Photography
In print and projected will be Tom Hunter’s Swan Songs and Life and Death in Hackney, Stephen Gill’s  exploration of Hackney Wick, Chris Dorely-Brown’s urban landscapes, Ruth Baily’s celebration of George Gilbert Scotts gothic masterpiece, The Midland Grand, Pete Marshall’s 20 year long investigation of development in the Lea Valley and Alexander Brattell’s imaginative exploration of Victoria Park.

Audio
In the listening room: a world premiere of Alan Dien’s latest piece on Caledonian Road, Allan Hall’s Monument Nick Hamilton’s Foot and Mouth selections from the best of Resonance FM and The Hackney Podcast.

Doc Surgery
Audience members are invited to join a drop-in documentary surgery, where documentary makers from across the media – photographers, film-makers and broadcast artists – will be available alongside representatives from the festival to look at portfolios, talk about project ideas, or their own work and careers.

Workshops
There will be audio and photography workshops running from 11-2pm (available on a first come first serve basis), giving participants the chance to engage directly with the local environment – so bring your digital camera – video or photo – if you’d like to take part.

Advance booking advised.
